Welcome to Nauvoo 100: It's Beautiful

Allan & I will be spending 100 weeks in Nauvoo, Illinois serving a mission.  Where else on earth is there a more beautiful place to be.   We arrived at the Mississippi River, March 12, 2018 at sunset.   Crossing the bridge from Ft. Madison, Iowa, to Illinois a joyous and happy spirit filled our hearts, knowing we were coming to our new home.  

We would like you to share this time with us.
Through thick and thin between sunshine and muss. 
Our Nauvoo 100 mission we'll make no fuss.
So visit one and all, don't miss the bus!





      It has taken me awhile to figure out how to do the blog on our laptop Apple computer.   With a class from Elder Scott and Sister Desiree Crump, who are also serving a mission here, I am going back to the beginning.  You may have received my emails.  They will continue, also.   I hope to bring the blog up to date as quickly as possible.   Email me at skip50schmidt@yahoo.com if you want the emails or such.

Welcome to where we will work for two years. It's Facilities Maintenance.  Now give it three cheers. Coming and going through sweat and tears, We'll serve here and love it, or so it appears. This large Church owned area in an out of the way location by the river, includes carpentry, painting, grounds, mechanic shop, plumbing, electrical, housing, green houses, HVAC, conservation and many other things to keep Old Nauvoo running smoothly. We met the managers of the different areas and were given the FM missionary tour.   Elder Schmidt's eyes bulged out when we went through the carpentry shop as he saw all the state of the art saws and such.  Just behind these doors, we met with the lead project managers to tell them what we do best.  Allan, usually the quiet guy, spent some time explaining the variety of areas he has learned.  I was even amazed at the ole' guy.  When it was my turn it took less than a minute to say, "I like to weed aft...

A Party for a Prairie Grass Burn

Annually in March this one acre of six foot tall prairie grass, that has been growing here for forty years is burned to help the roots send out new shoots.   When the country was being colonized, prairie grass covered seventy percent of the land.   Now, very little of it exists.   The Church hired a botanist to select the seeds that most resembled the original grasses to plant as a reminder of what it was once like.   Because the roots are so deep and thick, it took several years to grow.    The city fire department is on hand at one corner and they start the fire at the other end.   The towns folk and missionaries come to see.  Consessions are sold, chairs are set out and everyone lines up as if watching a parade. From the first grasses that were started on fire to the last one, it only took about five minutes or less until the entire acre was consumed.   It had been raining all week, so the grass was not that dry.  Fires ...

Concrete Close Call at the Condos

 Allan & the construction crew had a seven yard pour of cement scheduled for August 20th.  It was threatening rain, but they started at 6 a.m. hoping to beat it.   We had had other storm warnings that never materialized.  This time the rain came in buckets and didn't stop.  The concrete had to be saved.  A big roll of plastic was spread over the entire length of the eight foot wide by one hundred twenty feet long project.  Twenty or more missionaries and employees were asked to help hold the plastic over the workers that were finishing the job.  This was right up against the apartments, so the four homes were opened.    Some in their stocking feet helped hold the plastic from inside each place through the open windows so as not let any rain or water ruin the job.   Coats, umbrellas and buckets came in handy as they waited and waited and waited.  It was several hours of hold and finishing before the rain le...
